Design Software

I am happy to report that I am the proud owner of Adobe CS 4 Design Premium (student edition)! My father, the sponsor of my creative endeavors, is crazy awesome for making this possible. I am SO excited about my new software, I cannot wait to start making graphics for everything and everyone! I am a list maker at heart, so I would like to publicly commit to the following tasks to start my venture into the world of graphic and Web design...

1. Make a logo for this, my blog, URBAN JUNK FLOW
2. Develop a design for business cards, since I will most likely be working as an intern over the summer and will not yet have that privilege
3. Create a personal Web site as a means of marketing myself, my talents and experience
4. Create a logo for my one and only love, my puppy Noelle, who isn't really a puppy and is an old lady but who would appreciate a customized shirt, I'm sure... dont judge me...

Of course, this is just the beginning of many projects I am excited to work on :-) Maybe I will do one project a week and post here. I guess we will see!

The Monarch

My most recent costume design drawing is "the monarch." Although I realized even before starting the assignment that my professor had intended us to draw something along the lines of a king, prince, or other "monarch" figure in that sense, I couldn't help but create a design for the butterfly. She looks fluttery and fabulous in my eyes :-) And she was the only one of her kind in the class! Her hands were tricky, but I like the overall aesthetic, especially her posture. What do you think?

Health Care Reform

Here's my two cents on the new health care law that was passed last night. Your comments are loved!

So, I think we are taking a step in the right direction. But I don't think that this reform will magically solve every issue in our health care system. With 30 something million more people that have access to insurance comes a greater need for physicians, and while there is already a shortage, this clearly worsens the issue! Wait time to receive medical care will increase, which makes me nervous. Also, will doctors have time to see patients who come without serious or pressing issues? What about patients that just want to see their doctor for consultation purposes? I am also nervous as to how the government will handle insurance... just look at social security...

However, I do think that everyone should have access to health care insurance. It will be interesting to see what supplemental changes will be made in order to make this reform work. As it stands, this policy has blatant issues,  which Americans have clearly addressed! But I don't think this will be the last of the health care modifications we will see from Obama in the next four years... lets hope so at least! I think it's clear that I am nervous about this change, but change is good. If this does turn out to be a one trillion dollar mistake, however, I wonder what the repercussions will be...

Update: Here's a link to an interesting article I found via Twitter, states ten immediate benefits. This may make some of y'all feel a little better :-)

Set of Sketches

My collection of costume design sketches for A Streetcar Named Desire.

Top (From Left): Negro Woman, Stella
Center: Blanche
Bottom (From Left): Mitch, Blanche

This is not a complete set, but my selection of favorites. Some of their toes got cut off in the scanning process, but they are included in the originals!
My favorite is the "negro woman," who I actually drew at the last minute. I also like Blanche's two looks, which are fitting to her personality, in my opinion. Mitch is looking handsome in his date night outfit, and Stella looks simple and conservative- the exact opposite of Blanche, her over-the-top sister. What do you think?

Baby Electric

I have only been drawing the human figure for about two and a half months, and I think I am doing better and better!

Here's another costume design rendering I've done recently; It is entitled "Baby Electric," which is the phrase which inspired the design.

I think the drawing in and of itself is nice- I like her stance, her face is nice, and I like the shape of her body and legs.

Thinking of things I would have done differently, the dress could be sexier, and the colors could be more "electric" to best convey the phrase that inspired her.

Growing Pains

I have a case of growing pains. :-(

I am leaving the past behind, and am on the brink of a new life, a college diploma, my first job, new relationships, new friendships and stronger family ties. It is hard for me to transition from old to new, but with the requirement of independence and strength, I am bound to come out of hard times with my head held high. I hope, at least.

Clinging to what is familiar has become somewhat regrettable, although I don’t like to regret; my most recent and significant relationship just ended, and I have found myself feeling alone. Which is scary. I can’t help but wonder what will come next, who will be there as I start to feel better and am less lonely.

It is an optimistic thing, a scary thing, being in a position in life so exciting but so sad. My favorite taxi driver, Ted, said the last time I saw him that you don’t have good days without bad ones. So, in contemplating how to make the best out of today, I think I will focus on my freedom. I can apply to jobs anywhere in the country, and can take this broken relationship and learn and grow from it.
